Muizenberg coastal walkway repairs underway

17 October 2023

The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management branch will commence with the concrete repairs and maintenance of the coastal walkway between Muizenberg and St James this week. The intention is to complete the project by 30 November 2023, before the start of the holiday season. The project will also include specific repairs to the St James tidal pool.

'The repair work to this very popular coastal walkway and the St James tidal pool forms part of our ongoing coastal infrastructure maintenance. We are doing this ahead of the busy festive season, in time for beach goers to enjoy the newly refurbished infrastructure. We ask that residents and visitors remain patient while the works are underway over the next six weeks. These are both very busy public spaces, therefore we have planned a programme that has the least impact on public use. However there will be some unavoidable short term inconvenience to the public.

'In terms of the coastal walkway, the team will be focusing on the section from St James up until just before the Baileys Cottage. Then, at the St James tidal pool, we will be repairing the main break in the pool wall and various leaks,' said the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The work will be split into three phases starting from the St James tidal pool. All visitors to the area will be diverted from the coastal walkway to the pavement along Main Road via the railway underpasses while construction is under way. The phases, respective underpasses and the estimated timing of each phase will vary.

The City will provide adequate signage to direct the public accordingly:

  • Phase 1 is planned to take place from 16 October 2023 to 2 November 2023
  • Phase 2 is planned to take place from 3 November 2023 to 17 November 2023
  • Phase 3 is planned to take place from 20 November 2023 to 30 November 2023

Residents and beachgoers must please note that the site camp for the walkway construction team will be located at the Surfer's Corner Parking area behind Muizenberg Station.

  • The City will commence with repairs to the St James Tidal pool on Monday, 23 October, pending any adverse weather and sea conditions. The work should be concluded by the end of October 2023 if all goes as planned.

'During this time the pool and showers will be closed to the public. We will keep the public informed, and I want to ask all to please adhere to the signage at the site. The City's Coastal management team is making every effort to structure the works so that it has the least impact on the use of the pool but we will need to plan for tidal variations,' said Alderman Andrews.
